Mice are more than just a nuisance. They can spread diseases, attract parasites, and cause damage to your property. Mice reproduce quickly, and one pregnant mouse can soon become a full-blown infestation. It’s important to call a mouse exterminator as soon as you suspect there’s an issue.

Common Mouse Species on Long Island
The three most common mouse species on Long Island are house mice, deer mice, and meadow jumping mice. Because they can inhabit multiple areas in your property, it’s possible to have more than one type of mouse at a time. Most likely though, indoor infestations involve house mice.
House mice are 3-4 inches long, with a thin tail adding another 2-4 inches to their overall length. They are light brown to dark gray with roundish bodies, a pointed muzzle, and large ears with some hair. You may never see house mice, as they tend to be nocturnal and skittish. You are more likely to hear them scratching in your walls or to see droppings and gnaw marks.
Deer mice grow to 3-4 inches long, with a 4 to 5-inch tail. They are gray or reddish-brown in color, with white undersides. They are also distinguished from their house mouse cousins by their larger, more prominent eyes. Deer mice tend to stay outdoors, but they will invade homes that are near natural habitats, especially when the weather is cold or when food sources are scarce.
Meadow jumping mice are smaller and sleeker than their house or deer mouse cousins. They also have a longer tail and longer hind feet. They are easily identified by the way they travel – in a series of tiny hops. Although, they can jump several feet when necessary. Meadow jumping mice nest in prairies and other grasslands… but they often find their way into homes, barns, and outbuildings during inclement weather.
Signs of Mice in Your Home
- Droppings: Mice leave small, dark-brown, pellet-shaped droppings with pointed ends, roughly the size and shape of a grain of rice.
- Tracks: Like rats, mouse tracks are distinguished by four toe prints on the front and five on the hind paws; mouse tracks are typically about a half-inch long.
- Noises: Squeaking or scrabbling noises inside your walls may indicate the presence of mice.
- Damage: Mice cause damage by gnawing on anything they can use to access food or build their nests. They also contaminate your home with their feces and urine – spreading diseases to humans and domestic animals.
